Health Diary:

Sylvester gave a DNA sample to Hannes Lohi's canine genetic research program on May 2009.

He has MYDOG DNA passport.

12/2007 OD without dissecans in left shoulder & surgery made by orthopedist Mikael Morelius

02/2010 Verikokeet/Laboratorio: kaikki ok: kilpirauhanen, folaatti ja B12 -arvot (imeytyminen), seerumin elektrolyytit, proteiinit, sappihapot (0-arvo), kreatiini, kinaasi, kolestroli.

02/2010 Spectrum spot allergy report (allergy tests). Positive to Festuca, Phleum pratense, Lolium, Anthoxanthum odoratum, Dactylis glomerata, Ambrosia, Plantago lanceolata, Urtica dioica, Trifolium pratense, Taraxacum officinale, Alnus, Corylus avellana, Populus, Salix, Aspergillus, Cladosporium, Rhizopus, Curvularia, Candida Albicans, d.pteronyssinus, d.farinae, Lepido, Acarus siro, rabbit, pork, soya, oat, potato, tomato, pea, pyrethrum.

12/2010 started allergen immunotherapy

8/2011 allergen immunotherapy discontinued because of no visible improvement

5/2013 started eating BARF menu and finally gained more weight and became very energetic.

We had tried feeding BARF to Sylvester before but maybe Muumi's arrival to this household did the trick. Now Sylvester knows that if he doesn't eat his "kibble" there will be Muumi eating them eagerly. When there was just Sylvester and Dima or Sylvester and Kenya or Sylvester and Ana he didn't think much of it but obviously Muumi is such a bad competitor that Sylvester doesn't dare leave his food uneaten. Before he only ate raw meat meant for human consumption and if we tried to be strick about it he could be 3 days not eating and I would become so afraid of his heart and health (one can't starve long if one is already anorectic) that i would cave in and feed him his usual food. I don't consider Sylvester as picky and I think he has healthy appetite.

My conclusion is that he is unable to digest all the food he eats

and get the nutrients he needs to look healthy & have energy.

Kibbles we tried:

Choice (lamb based)

James Wellbeloved (mostly lamb based)

Eagle Pack Holistic Select (lamb & turkey)

At this point I figured that all kibbles which I had tried and hadn't suited were lamb based. I had bought lamb because I thought it was of better quality but all it did was digest badly causing poop to be soft. Next I tried kibbles bought from vet.

Hill's Prescription Diet Canine - I/D (This is the best kibble for dog with stomach problems like diarrhea)

Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Gastro Intestinal (caused poop to be round soft pancakes)

Then I got a hint from the owner of great dane. Her dog had been skinny and she suggested:

Royal Canin Giant

and when Sylvester liked it I of course had to try:

Royal Canin 4300 & 4800

All these kibbles contained something Sylvester was allergic to

so my next try was kibbles containing nothing he was allergic to:

Lukullus (caused Sylvester to barf)

Natural Menu (best kibble but still kept Sylvester skinny)

So now Sylvester eats only raw meat and is in excellent condition.

***

After feeding him only raw meat we have tried to add fiber in his diet

because every vet I have ever met says dogs need fiber and they are right.

***

Sylvester @ vet for stomach problems:

3/2010 enteritis in Norway

Autumn 2017 Tylosin stomach antibiotic

6/2019 Tylosin stomach antibiotic

Sylvester suffered from excessive grass eating during his last years. It was propably caused by raw meat diet. His last diet change was to Risella whole grain rice porridge and boiled boneless chicken chunks. This should have been his diet all his life. We had tried buckwheat porridge and boiled minced chicken but that just kept stools in liquid form.

Nowadays I do not recommend feeding (only) raw meat to anyone. Dogs need dietary fiber. Also meat is better for stomach and intestines when it is lightly boiled.

***

Sylvester's cause of death was rupturing of Hemangiosarcoma tumor in right heart base.

Secondary findings: IBD (Ohutsuolessa todettiin kohtalaisia pitkäaikaisia tulehdusmuutoksia (kohtalainen krooninen multifokaalinen lymfoplasmasytäärinen enteriitti, jossa kohtalainen eosinofiilinen komponentti), jotka voivat liittyä krooniseen tulehdukselliseen suolistosairauteen (IBD).

***

Sylvester will not be used for breeding because of his OD.

Even without OD I do not think he would have been used for breeding.

I do not consider his digestion as breeding quality.

Picture above was taken May 16th 2013

Sylvester before BARF on World Winner in Hungary.

During this trip Kristiina suggested I try BARF again

and for that I am eternally grateful for her.

This is what I considered as good condition back then.

I had tried to feed Sylvester like "vierasta sikaa" before trip.

Picture above was taken August 12th 2013

Sylvester has been eating BARF aproximately 2-3 months

and looks already fantastic compared to before.

He has so much more energy.

His fur is silky and finally has some grease in it

so it is not at all dry like before.

Areas like thighs which before were somewhat baldish

have a much better fur in them.

Most importantly:

Sylvester finally has a thin layer of fat under his skin.

Before he had what I called dry squirrel skin (oravannahka)

The colour of galgo español?

Sylvester has my dog DNA passport and in his results concerning colours he has dominant black or brindle in K locus. Reason behind him not having visible black in his fur is he has brown in B locus and that brown turns all black to brown. This does NOT mean that there is a galgo or other black dog among Sylvester's ancestors. It only means that Sylvester carries black in his genes (in K locus) but because of brown colour in B locus which turns all black into brown it will never manifest itself in Sylvester's fur & outer appearance. I was told by an expert of canine DNA testing company in Belgium that all dogs have carried black from the start so finding black colour from non black dogs' DNA means nothing.

My other podencos have MyDog Dna passports too and Anastasiya, Muumi, Hemuli & Unto don't have black or brindle in K locus.

Picture above is taken June 20th 2014. Sylvester is almost 7 years old and looks better than ever. I am so proud of him and so gratefull that Sylvester was MY puppy from the litter. I couldn't have gotten a better companion. Sylvester has taught me a lot about podencos. He is the sweetest podenco boy on Earth. We have had a rocky path together but Sylvester has always given his best for me. I love him so much and can't imagine life without him. My deepest regret is that I can't get his puppy. For obvious reasons of course but still. Sylvester's type is what I like in podenco: a bit roughly sculptured dog from dry mediterranean area. I also have a soft spot for big podi boys like Sylvester & Unto although I don't fancy breeding them.

Lure Coursing

Sylvester was 3 years old when I finally had the courage (and guts) to enter him in lure coursing competition. I had thought that competing with a dog who had OD in left shoulder as a puppy was pure selfish madness. Still as years went by and Sylvester didn't limp nor show any other symptoms in his operated shoulder I thought why not try at least once. We had practised at Helsinki Sighthound Club so I knew Sylvester would run after the lure. We had no expectations. Just wanted to catch him when the lure stopped. Since there was no accident nor anything otherwise alarming during that first competition I thought I could enter him for another and then another. We didn't do much / at all physical training before competitions so it didn't come as a suprise to us that Sylvester was always somewhat last in every one of them. He never ran like a bat out of hell. Holding his head up he more or less cruised around the field.

Sylvester @ metro, Sylvester's trademark ears :)

@ dog shows

Since Sylvester's hind legs' thigh muscles shook more than before during Kartano Weekend 2017 I decided it would be his last dog show. For those who don't know there's been podencos with shaking hind legs' thigh muscles in Necronomicon I-litter. Hind legs' thigh muscle trembling started when they were 1-2 years old and no diagnose was given to anyone. It's something though since my other podencos don't have it. I would describe it as involuntary muscle trembling. Sylvester's osteopath regards it as old dog thigh muscle trembling but I dont know the correctness of that "diagnose".

In January 2019 Sylvester was castrated due to benign tumor in left testicle and in May 2019 I suddenly realized that I hadn't noticed any hind leg muscleshaking for months. So I think it was testosterone and machismo and maybe nerves since Sylvester thinks himself as small mommy's boy :D

Few words about Hungary`s World Winner Dog Show:

All 4 judges were very nice and podenco friendly. I felt that they really knew what they were doing. I think this was the best World/European Winner I have ever visited. Everything went so smoothly and people were so friendly. There were cleaners & security. Both sighthound specialties were in fabulous Gödöllö park with big tent for exhibitors. No need for a tent of my own. It will be hard for Finland to organize a better World Winner dog show. Worth mention: The food was excellent and cheap. Definitely recommend!

IBIZANHOUND

Whenever one is in the fortunate position of awarding CCs, there will always be a general picture obtained from what is entered. This entry was indeed like the curate’s egg - good in parts! Despite the fact that our breed does not have a definitive upper height limit, it does not mean that bigger is better. Ibizan Hounds were used for catching rabbits to augment a somewhat meagre diet, so a big hound would not be able to do so easily and from a practical perspective a larger hound needs more food, requiring it to work twice as hard as a hound half of its size to provide the extra meat for it to eat! Movement caused me to shudder one or twice, extravagant, high stepping forehands (which would look better between the shafts of a governess cart) are not what the breed standard calls for when it uses the word ‘hovver’. The action at the trot is low, light, almost ground skimming and most importantly - long. Too many Ibizans here today displayed a ‘snapping upward’ from upper arm down to the pastern, creating a heightened trot rather than a forward one. Also, we appear to have light coloured rounded eyes creeping back into the breed, a fault which we had all thought to have virtually eliminated some years ago, beware! A plea that every breed specialist makes when faced with a ‘mixed’ entry is for all of us who choose to breed this magnificent creature, look dispassionately at your breeding stock, no dog/bitch is perfect and Mother Nature rarely meets any of us ‘half way’, endeavour to breed your next generation to conform not only to the breed standard, but to also heed the breeds function, for if we loose the Ibizan Hounds ability to function, we loose the Ibizan Hound. PGD 1 Woodcock’s Benjique Flavius Belby. W/c youngster, engaging personality with a long head and good earset, long neck on steep shoulders, long straight forelegs with correct feet in fore and hind, his topline was sometimes erratic along with his tail carriage, but given time he will settle to his job, long stride with correct low action. 2 Catchpole’s Falconcrag Spanishsteps. W/c smooth sapling, largest of ears on long head and convex muzzle, a little light on eye colour, good reach of neck, straight front, long ribbing, rises over the topline, very loose on the move and tailset and carriage is a little too high, he is very tall and hence balance is not evident but a cheerful chap who must be a joy to live with. LD A tough class to assess. 1 Macaulay’s Falconcrag Rocha For Gartlove. W/c smooth, heavy in headpiece and rather too round in eye shape, good earset leading into a long, muscular neck, good forechest, a little short in ribbing and a little long in loins, slight slope to croup, movement is far too high stepping and a little lacking in precision, carries his tail too high. 2 Carter’s Afilador Moonlight Shadow ShCM. Flatly refused to use his ears! C/w, rough coated chap, good eye shape and colour, finely built with firm muscular frame, a shade short in neck, good shoulders, has a tendency to knuckly over in fore, firm erect pasterns, well arched toes, long ribbing but arches his topline at times, long hindquarters, movement let him down somewhat with a short, choppy stride and tied-in at the elbow coming towards. OD 1 Hamilton’s Benjique Whistle In The Wind. C/w smooth who had the best head in the entry, fine, long with the slight downward tilt of the nose, good earset in line with the eyes, strong jaws, beautiful almond shaped amber eyes, long, lean neck into balanced steep shoulders and upper arm, straight front with firm pasterns, chest depth clears his elbows by a good 2 inches, lacks forechest, good ribbing, long hindquarters, has still some maturing to do but he outmoved everything today. CC (his second) and after much deliberation, BOB. 2 Kaikkonen’s Necronomicon Ishaq. Nice to see this chap back at Crufts, he has filled out to advantage, his head is fine but lacks definition, being almost conical, earset is low which means the head is somewhat untypical, but a dog doesn’t run on his head! His body shape is balanced and typy, long, muscular neck, steep shoulders, straight front with fine bone, long flat ribbing, compact loins, a shade steep in croup, lacking a little in strength behind, he moves with a long low stride and impressed enough for the RCC. 3 Steele’s Ch Faisan de Perrera Falconcrag. Heavier in muzzle and a shade short in headpiece, reluctant to use his ears today, muscular neck on good shoulders, good front, well ribbed back but displays a less than level back, long hindquarters, well muscled all through, just not playing the game today. VB 1 Frost’s Akhanubis Aurora. W/c smoothcoat, absolutely feminine, long flat skull, eyes are rounded, good earset, long neck, long shoulders, straight fore with fine bone, long ribcage, short loins, slight slope to croup, movement was light and effortless. PGB 1 Carter’s Afilador A Hint Of Jasmine. C/w smoothcoat girl, is maturing into a pleasing hound, fine head with amber eyes, fine erect ears, perhaps a shade more strength in underjaw needed, long lean neck on steep shoulders, straight front with firm pasterns and excellent feet, level topline, long flat ribbing, good tuck up, long, muscular hindquarters, handled to perfection to get the best from her. LB1 Carter &Donnaby’s Benjique Cappuchino Girl. W/c, possesses a pleasing outline from the first look, her head could be a little more refined, but has femininity, almond shaped eyes sof amber, good earset and ears are highly mobile, long neck on steep shoulders, straight front with well arched toes, sufficient forechest, long flat ribcage, level back, slight slope to croup and long hindquarters, movement was long and low with the lightness of footfall that the breed calls for. CC (her third, congratulations!) was very unsettled in the challenge for BOB, a pity. 2 Clarke’s Afilador Relight My Fire. C/w, r/c, fine skull with slight stop, dark amber eyes, ears set on a little low, long lean neck, good forechest, well angled fore and hind, long ribcage with correct depth, well arched toes, good tuck up, tail is set on well and carried correctly, moved with a lovely long stride, handled beautifully. 3 Carter’s Afilador Spark To A Flame. Another c/w r/c and litter sister to second, and despite a few extra pounds, has similar qualities. OB 1 Carter’s Diecisiete Mandarina At Afilador. C/w s/c finely built bitch, long skull with slight stop, lovely eye shape and colour, good earset and carriage, long, lean neck on steep shoulders, straight front with well arched toes, too short in ribbing, level back, a little over-angulated in hind, good tailset, a little timid under the hand, movement was stilted and choppy even when moved on a loose lead. RCC. 2 Carter &Donnaby’s Nor Ch Rosenhills Dwarf The Fairy Zita At Benjique (Imp). C/w s/c in beautiful condition but is just a little too heavy all through, good headshape with lovely almond shaped eyes of correct colour, lean neck on good forehand, long flat ribcage, level back, long muscular hindquarters, moved well and true. I think if she were a little taller on the leg she would have better balance. 3 Macaulay’s Es Viver For Gartlove. W/c bitch with pleasing head and expression, long neck, shoulders are a shade longer than ideal and brisket is too deep, long ribbing with muscular loins, long hindquarters giving her plenty of drive on the move but just too much height particularly in fore. Good Citizen B 1 Taylor’s Cazador Suenos Bruja. C/w s/c, the best schooled exhibit by far! Didn’t put a foot wrong, long, flattish skull, a little round in eye shape, keen expression and earset a little low, lean neck on steep shoulders, fine boned, brisket of correct depth, tailset is high and tail is carried gaily, moved well otherwise.

IBIZAN HOUND

I really enjoyed judging this interesting and challenging breed; one

of my absolute favourites! The Breed Standard is very distinct in its

definition of basic breed type, in the General Appearance Section “

tall, narrow, finely built, large erect ears “. Unfortunately a

heavier build seems to be coming into this breed; this for me changes

“type”. The beautiful Best of Breed winner, Stoneham’s Ch.

Fineza del Paran is one of the best examples of the breed that I have

ever judged, or seen. Just over two years of age, she has lovely body

proportions, has a lovely head and expression when she deigned to show

off; an enthusiastic showgirl she is not! Instead she shows the

dignity and slight reluctance that only the truly beautiful can get

away with. Good clean neck, well set into typical shoulders, stands

very true over her properly narrow front, excellent pasterns and feet.

Excellent firm topline, excellent croup and tailset. Lean hindquarters

of proper angulation. Free and easy mover, showing a slight hover when

she got into her stride. For me it was so exciting to judge such a

wonderful example of this difficult breed. And, if she doesn’t get

bored with the show ring, she will be better yet! Best of Opposite sex

was Kaikkonen’s Necronomicon Ishaq (ATC) a two and a half year old

dog from Finland. Still somewhat immature looking, he is of lovely,

rather shorter bodied proportions, and scores over the bitch in the

distance from the bottom of the chest to the elbow. This apparent lack

of depth of chest is such a distinctive feature of the breed. He has a

nice masculine head, good neck typical front angulation. Rather softer

in pastern than ideal for the breed. Excellent and distinct forechest.

Good topline, excellent tuck up. Typical long but lean hindquarters. A

nice free and active mover, but not covering the ground as well as the

bitch today. Overall I felt that they made a very good pair when

competing for Best of Breed, something that always pleases me as a

judge when assessing a breed. VD (1) 1. Catchpole’s Akhanubis Under

Pressure. At over 12 years of age, he was enjoying his day out in the

showring, and he looks very well for his age. Nice masculine head,

with the big stiff ears so typical of the breed. Strong and now rather

thickset neck, typical front construction, but standing rather broad

over his elbows now. Firm over the topline still, hindquarters now

starting to show the age. Owner and hound looked so proud going around

the ring. SPD (3) 1. Catchpole’s Falconcrag Spanishsteps. A very tall

dog, and at 13 months of age not quite together yet. For me he showed

the best breed type in this class, and although not totally co-

ordinated in movement yet, showed the long reaching stride with a

distinct “hover”, that is such a distinctive feature of the breed.

Lovely masculine head, lovely big ears used well, good neck, typical

front angulation, some forechest. Firm topline, but rise over the loin

at present too distinct; very good croup, tailset and long lean

hindquarters. An exciting prospect for the future, but must not grow

any taller. 2. Falconcrag the Devil wears Nisyros. Litter brother to

the winner, and shared many of his good qualities; must gain weight as

he was quite ribby. At present stands high over the loin and rear

quarters. For me the rise over the loin is too overdone, probably a

growth stage. Hindquarters at present rather over-angulated. Good and

free mover. 3. Falconcrag Rocha for Gartlove. Another litter brother

and a smaller version of these. Very good body proportions overall.

Nice head, ears rather small, but in proportion to his body. Good

neck, topline at the present time rather overdone, with distinct rise

over the loin, typical lean hindquarters. Did not move with the

freedom and drive of his brothers today. PGD (1) 1. Carter’s Afilador

Moonlight Shadow. Semi rough dog of nineteen months, very well handled

and presented. Good typical size, not overdone and of proper

substance. Lovely head and expression good neck, typical front

angulation, Typical depth of chest, good firm topline but tends to

fall off from the loin, good hindquarters, rather short tail. Would

like to see more freedom of movement as seen from the side. Very loose

over the elbows on the move. LD (2) 1. Anderson & Watt’s First

Dynasty’s Dios Mio Nisyros (imp Germany) 26 month old dog of good

type, rather too strongly built. Pleasant head and expression in his

all white head, good ears. Rather thickset neck, rather more

angulation of forequarters, distinct forechest. While his topline is

firm, the spine and vertebrae are too accentuated, hopefully a growth

stage. Proper depth of body. Rather too much angulation of

hindquarters. Very long striding side action. 2. Afilador License to

Kill. Nineteen month old rough dog, a proper workman like size. Head

appears rather squared off, possibly because of the beard, Rather

smaller ears, Proper neck, proper front angulation and matching rear

hindquarters. Tail rather short. Although an active mover, could show

more reach and drive, as he is rather short stepping as seen from the

side. OD (4) 1. CC Kaikkonen’s Necronomicon Ishaq. Young male of

beautiful breed type and overall proportions. 2 res. CC Ch. Barnesmore

Balius. Two year old smooth dog, I note litter brother to the BOB

winner. Rather longer in overall body proportions, and topline could

be more level. Very pleasant masculine head, strong over the neck,

proper width over the front quarters, but upper arm set very upright,

almost forward. Typical in depth of body, good over the loin and

croup, rather long angulated hindquarters. Scored on his very free

easy mover. 3. Ch. Catorce Verde. Semi rough dog coming up to five

years of age, a dog I have always liked. Very well muscled, a very

workman like dog. Excellent and well balanced overall body

proportions, lovely head and expression, good but rather strong neck,

forequarters rather more angulated, distinct forechest, typical depth

of chest. Unfortunately has broadened considerably over the forehand

with maturity, he really cannot be said to be narrow or finely built.

A good steady mover but would like to see more reach and drive. VB (3,

1) 1. Frost’s Akh-Anubis Aurora. Nearly ten year old, very feminine,

bitch of typical proportions and outline. Most gorgeous head and

expression, typical neck and front, Good firm topline. Somewhat soft

in hindquarters now. 2. Ch. Paran Grace under Pressure. Nearly eleven

year old bitch also presented in excellent body and condition. Rather

longer in body proportions. Lovely head and expression, good neck,

typical front angulations, proper depth of chest, nice long

hindquarters. Rather rounded over the loin and croup to tailset. Two

lovely bitches! SPB (1) and Best Puppy. Marston-Pollock’s Falconcrag

Gabriella. Lovely 13 month old puppy of lovely size and breed type.

Lovely head, one ear still slightly sloppy, good neck and front,

typical topline and hindquarters. A wonderful free mover for her age,

already showing the slight hover. A little sensitive in this

challenging environment. PGB (3, 1) 1. Locatelli’s Cazador Baile

Bruja. Finely built nineteen month old bitch of very nice type and

outline, still very young looking. Beautiful head with excellent ears,

good neck, typical front construction, good topline but rather steep

in croup. Long hindquarters. Won on her beautiful free long striding

hind action. 2. Barnesmore Artemis. Very strongly made bitch where I

would prefer more femininity; Very pleasant head, large erect ears,

tends to stand carelessly in front. Strong hindquarters. Free extended

side action but very untidy in elbows on the move. LB (5) 1. and res.

CC Carter’s Diecisiete Mandarina at Afilador. Very feminine bitch

of lovely type and outline; at four years of age very well finished in

body and condition. Beautiful head and expression, very good neck,

typical front construction, and nice and upright over the pasterns.

Could have more depth of pad. Typical depth of chest, firm topline,

proper croup, long lean hindquarters. Presented in gleaming coat. Nice

proper mover. 2. Afilador Relight my Fire. Five year old bitch,

typical and without any exaggerations. Beautiful head and expression,

typical neck and front, although can stand very wide over the elbows.

Proper depth of chest, good topline, topline somewhat rounded over the

loin and croup to a deep tailset. Good mover. 3. Barnesmore Artemis.

OB (4) 1. CC & Best of Breed, Stoneham’s Ch. Fineza del Paran. 2.

Paran Amatista. This five year old bitch is difficult to assess, as

she didn’t feel like being a showgirl today, but a bitch of lovely

breed type who has to be handled to be appreciated. Lovely head, the

cleanest of necks, very proper front construction. Excellent topline,

croup and hindquarters. Loved her! 3. Norw. Ch. Rosenhills Dwarf-the

fairy Zita at Benjique (imp. Norway) Five year old bitch of good size

but rather strongly made; still of very good breed type. Lovely head

and expression, calm and sensible. Good proper neck, typical in front

angulation with prominent forechest. Tends to stand very broad over

her elbows. Very good topline and hindquarters. Good mover. GOOD

CITB (1) Taylor’s Cazador Suenos Bruja. Nineteen month old bitch,

nicely feminine and a calm sweet character. Very nice head, excellent

ears, good neck which could be longer to balance her rather longer

proportions, typical fore hand angulation, good topline, croup and

long lean hindquarters. Steady and free mover. Presented in lovely

condition.
